I-Smile

I-Smile: From little smiles to lifelong smiles, improving the health of Iowans

In addition to developing Public Health Services and Systems to improve population health with a focus on health equity, LCHD's team of dental professionals provide basis - mostly preventive - oral health services in a variety of programs and public health settings under the public health supervision of Iowa licensed dentists including:

  • Oral Screening
  • Risk Assessment
  • Fluoride Varnish
  • Dental Sealant
  • Silver Diamine Fluoride
  • Oral Health Education - including Oral Hygiene Instructions, Nutritional Couseling for the Control of Dental Disease, Tobacco Cessation Counseling
  • Intraoral Photographs
  • Radiographs
  • Referral
  • Care Coordination - assistance finding a dentist, payment source, transportation, etc.
  • Teledentisry Exam (by dentist); which may allow for expedited treatment


Note: Services vary by program and are on a case-by-care basis.


I-Smile is a statewide program that connects children and families with dental, medical, and community resources to ensure a lifetime of health and wellness.  LCHD provides I-Smile services for Des Moines, Henry, Lee, Louisa, Muscatine, and Washington Counties in partnership with Trinity Muscatine Public Health and Washington County Public Health.  Funding is received from Iowa Department of Health and Human Services and made possible by federal Title V Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Block Grant dollars and other state appropriations.  To learn more about the State I-Smile program click here.
 
Through I-Smile and Early Childhood Iowa funding, LCHD and its partners provide services at many child care centers and preschools including Head Start (in addition to WIC clinics) throughout the service area.  For you convenience, links to electronic consent forms asscoaited with the appropriate county are below.  Contact your child's child care center or preschool or corresponding agency below to see if and when your child's child care center or preschool will be served.

I-Smile @ School is a school sealant program in nearly all counties.  LCHD provides I-Smile @ School services for Des Moines, Henry, Lee, Lee, Louisa, Muscatine, and Washington Counties in partnership with Trinity Muscatine Public Health and Washington County Public Health.  Funding is received from Iowa Department of Health and Human Services and made possible by Delta Dental of Iowa Foundation and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  To learn more about the I-Smile @ School program click here.

School Dental Screening Requirement

Kindergarten and 9th grade students in the State of Iowa are required to complete a dental screening for enrollment in a public or accredited non-public school.  For the Certificate of Dental Screening click here.
