Oral Health Programs

Child Care Centers and Preschools

Children ages 0-5 attending participating child care centers and preschools in Lee, Des Moines, and Van Buren Counties are able to receive oral health education and toothbrushing instructions, dental screenings, and fluoride varnish applications.  Early Childhood Iowa funds these programs - Children First ECI funds Lee and Van Buren Counties and DHLW ECI funds Des Moines County.

Head Start and WIC

Children enrolled in Head Start and WIC in Lee, Davis, Des Moines, Jefferson, and Van Buren Counties are able to receive oral health education and toothbrushing instructions, dental screenings, and fluoride varnish applications while attending their WIC appointments or Head Start class.

Also, in Lee and Des Moines Counties, pregnant women up to eight weeks postpartum, enrolled in the Maternal Health Program, can receive these oral health services while at their WIC appointments.

I-Smile

The I-Smile™ Dental Home Initiative is a program that helps Iowa's children connect with dental services.

School-Based Sealant Program

Students attending participating schools in Lee, Davis, Des Moines, Jefferson, and Van Buren Counties are able to receive dental sealants while at school.  Sealants are a protective coating applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth to help prevent cavities.  Participants may also receive oral health education and toothbrushing instructions, dental screenings, and fluoride varnish applications.

Certificate of Dental Screening for School

All Iowa children enrolling for the first time in Kindergarten or 9th grade must have a dental screening.  It's required! 

  • Kindergarten Students
    >  Screening must occur no earlier than age 3 and no later than 4 months after enrollment
    >  Screenings can be performed by: dentists, dental hygienists, physicians, 
    nurses, or physician assistants
  • 9th Grade Students 
    >  Screening must occur no earlier than 1 year before enrollment and no later than 4 months after enrollment
    >  Screenings can only be performed by: dentists or dental hygienists

This group meets quarterly to improve oral health for all, through access, advocacy, education, and prevention.

Note: Direct preventive oral health services are provided by registered dental hygienists under public health supervision from an Iowa licensed dentist.  Trained registered nurses may provide oral health education and toothbrushing instructions, dental screenings, and fluoride varnish applications.  The services provided do not take the place of regular dental checkups at a dental office.
